Chapter 23 - Becoming a World Power

The Filipino War For Independence

The Philippine-American War went from 1899 to 1902.  Even though sovereignty over the Philippine Islands was transfered from Spain to the U.S. in 1898 for $20 million.  The people that lived there, however, wanted to rule themselves.  The war was a result of the Filipinos not thinking that it was okay for the U.S. to have purchased the Philippines from Spain.  America wanted to civilize the Filipino people, but they were strictly against that idea.  It took three years for America to win the war.  It cost $600 million.  There were 10,000 American casualties and 200,000 civilian causalities.  The video below is very useful, and the map is just so you can get an idea of where the Philippines are in relation to America.  Feel free to zoom in and out, and look at the satellite view.
